GREENING OF THE SOUL

INTRODUCTION

This is the personal story of a former forester concerned about ecology, or the greenness of the planet, and equally about his own personal search for spiritual development. Whilst working and living in Africa he became aware of the possibility of using “instinct” to find his way in the bush, and related the odd snatches of instinctive guidance that he experienced with his personal search for spiritual guidance, linking it also with the possibility of gaining an instinctive understanding of the earth’s needs.

His search led him to explore various “ways” and different religions, which all seemed to point in the same direction: towards the discovery or rediscovery of the truly human instincts that must have been left behind during the childhood of mankind, at the very beginning of humanity, in the state symbolised by the Garden of Eden. Religious beliefs were obviously not enough, and direct action seemed to be needed, but he soon ran across a major snag. It became plain that “action” in the non-material sphere, the very act of wishing to achieve anything, or of “trying” to find a spiritual path, were major obstacles in his search.

Eventually he was guided towards the organisation known as “Subud”, or Susila Budhi Dharma, which enables anyone who approaches it with an open mind to find a way to quieten the desires whilst retaining full awareness. The awakening of the human soul which ensues begins a life-long process of “receiving” truly spiritual influences, of which a small part is indeed the recapturing of ancient human “instincts”. Perhaps more important than this is the gradual regaining of the truly human condition, the goal of all spiritual ways and all the major world religions.
